Dr Philippa Malmgren

US policy analyst, Bestselling author, Former US presidential adviser, economist and Founder of DRPM Group

Dr Philippa Malmgren helps companies, investors, policymakers and the public better understand the interplay between politics, policy, geopolitics and economics. Her most recent role was acting as political advisor to Theresa May. She is a regular commentator and guest anchor on CNBC, BBC, Bloomberg and Sky News. She founded DRPM Group, an economic advisory firm whose clients include investment banks, fund managers and hedge funds, as well as Sovereign Wealth Funds, pension funds, global corporations and family offices. She has an especially strong view on the importance of manufacturing in modern economies and cofounded H-Robotics, which manufactures commercial drones.

She serves on several advisory boards and working groups: Real Vision TV, the British Ministry of Defence Working Group on Global Strategic Trends, the Greater London Authority Infrastructure Advisory Board, MIT Media Lab Food Project and Indiana University School of Public Policy and Environmental Affairs, as well as the Indiana University Manufacturing Initiative. She is a governor and member of the Council of Management of the Ditchley Foundation, which encourages global dialogue on policy issues. She also briefs Britain’s top military leaders in the British Army Generalship Program. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Chatham House, The Institute for International Strategic Security and the Royal Geographical Society.

She has attended the Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole Meeting for more than ten years. She served as financial market adviser to the President in the White House and on the National Economic Council from 2001-2002. She was a member of the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets and the Working Group on Corporate Governance through Enron and 911. She was the deputy head of Global Strategy at UBS and the chief currency strategist for Bankers Trust. She headed the Global Investment Management business for Bankers Trust in Asia.

In 2015 her book Signals: the Breakdown of the Social Contract and the Rise of Geopolitics became a best-seller on Amazon in four categories. The updated version of Signals will be published by Weidenfeld & Nicholson in June 2016. In April 2015 she also wrote Geopolitics for Investors, which was commissioned by the CFA.

Dr Malmgren has a BA from Mount Vernon College and a MSc and PhD from the London School of Economics. She completed the Harvard Program on National Security, briefed The Office of Net Assessment at the Pentagon and participated in the Pentagon’s Joint Civilian Orientation Conference (JCOC).

Lesley-Ann Morgan

Global Head of DC & Retirement at Schroders UK

Lesley-Ann has over 20 years’ experience providing investment solutions to global institutional clients.

As Global Head of DC and Retirement at Schroders, she is responsible for Schroders’ view on DC best practice and ensuring that there is a global strategy to deliver the best outcomes for DC members/participants. Prior to this, Lesley-Ann was the Head of the Global Strategic Solutions team, where she was responsible for designing solutions for complex global clients.

Lesley-Ann joined Schroders from Towers Watson in July 2011 (previously Watson Wyatt), where she was a partner. At Towers Watson, she was Head of the Client Delivery Group, responsible for the delivery of investment solutions to clients and the lead consultant to a number of large pension schemes. Previous roles at Watson Wyatt included manager research (Head of Pacific Basin equities and Head of Japanese equities) and Investment Head of Defined Contribution (North East US). Since she has been at Schroders, Lesley-Ann has worked with pension funds across North America, Mexico, Brazil and Asia.

She has also worked with regulators and industry bodies, written and co-authored a wide range of papers, quoted in the press on significant issues facing the pensions industry, and she also speaks at conferences covering the appropriate investment approaches for institutions. Winner of the Funds Europe Thought Leadership award in 2015 for ‘Global Lessons in Developing Post-Retirement Solutions’. She was also published in the British Actuarial Journal in March 2017 with her paper ‘Designing successful post-retirement solutions by blending growth, income and protection’.

Lesley-Ann is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and has a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics from Warwick University.

Guy Fletcher

Head of Research & Client Solutions: Investments Core at Sanlam Investments

Guy joined Sanlam Investments in 2016 as Head of Client Solutions to provide a thought leadership function in the portfolio construction and solutions space for institutional clients. Client Solutions’ primary goal is to combine strategic consulting with portfolio management to solve clients’ complex investment challenges. This involves analysing external client requirements, identifying preferred outcomes and mapping this against internal capabilities. Client Solutions utilises single and multi-asset concepts across all asset classes, sectors, styles and regions to provide tailored offerings to Sanlam’s institutional clients.

Guy has over 30 years of experience within investments, more recently in private equity where he has been involved in industries as diverse as renewable energy and digital marketing, and where he still holds non-executive directorships. Prior to that, he was alternately Director, CEO, CIO, COO and Head of Risk at Vunani Managers (previously Peregrine Quant), a start-up institutional asset management company. He was responsible for starting NIB Quants in 1999 and was one of the team that introduced the Core/Satellite process into South Africa in the mid 1990’s. Guy boasts a long track record of successes at Vunani as well as in his other roles. Of interest is that he was responsible for the development of the free-float methodology used by the JSE when it launched its new indices in 2003.

Guy is a member of the CFA Institute, was awarded his CFA charter in 1992, and holds a BSc (Hons) in Operations Research and Maths Stats from UCT.

Iman Rappetti

Respected journalist and news anchor

Currently a respected senior journalist with PowerFM, Iman Rappetti is an award-winning journalist who has successfully MC'd a number of large corporate and public events. She has more than fifteen years' experience in online, print, radio and broadcast journalism and has covered stories all the way from the Middle East to Africa and the US, with politics as her main focus. She formerly co-anchored News Night with Jeremy Maggs for approximately five years.

As a speaker, Iman’s personal story is a moving tale of how South Africa's race and class politics have shaped our identities and sense of belonging. Her humorous and poignant descriptions of her mixed cultural heritage give us insight into the struggles of interracial parents and how that affected a whole generation of children who were struggling to shape their own identities and futures. She presents in the honest, down to earth and often amusing style she has come to be known for.

Her MC work has included the 2012 and 2013 Standard Bank Journalism Awards and she facilitated the former Public Protector - Thuli Madonsela's - public lecture at the Wits Business School. In 2011 she hosted US First Lady Michelle Obama on her first SA tour as part of the Young African Women's Leadership Forum, serving as an anchor for dialogue between Obama and young African female leaders.

Mabatho Seeiso

Professional Trustee

Mabatho serves as an independent trustee for the Post Office Retirement Fund as well as independent trustee or chair for several other pension fund boards. She also serves as a non-executive director for a number of companies. She is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Southern African Pension Fund Investment Forum and a member of the Institute of Directors Southern Africa. She has served as a professional trustee since 2008, and her first board appointment was independent investment committee member for Rand Mutual Assurance.

Mabatho’s past work experience includes working in sales, industrial and international international trade development, new business development in the oil industry and management consulting. She joined the financial services industry at the beginning of 2001 in private equity as an Assistant Portfolio Manager for Infrastructure Investments at Old Mutual Asset Management. In 2003 she became a Director and Head of Institutional Business Development and Marketing for Cadiz Asset Management until March 2007.

Mabatho’s true passion is to facilitate the empowerment of individuals with specific focus on women. In 2008, she formed a company called The Bridge which focuses on teaching on and facilitating personal development and the acquisition of self-leadership skills. Through her work she aims to contribute to enriching leadership diversity. She has spent the past 15 years undergoing her own self development and learning from some of the best teachers in the field.

Qualifications: Honours (Economics and Marketing) University of Wales, Aberystwyth College, Honours (Financial Analysis and Portfolio Management) University of Cape Town and an MBA from Hull University.

Ndabezinhle Mkhize

Chief Investment Officer of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund (EPPF)

Ndabezinhle (“Ndabe”) Mkhize is CIO of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund (EPPF), which is a DB pension fund with R134 billion assets invested across major geographies and all asset classes.

Ndabe has been involved in the financial services industry for close to 20 years, starting in the actuarial field and then moving to the asset management industry.

He began his career in 1998 at Old Mutual as an Actuarial Assistant and then moved to Prudential to take on the position of Equity Analyst in 2003. This was followed by a portfolio management role at Coronation Fund Managers. Between 2008 and 2010, Ndabe was involved in the direct real estate industry where he made an attempt to list the first SA Healthcare Property Fund in 2010. Subsequently, he joined the REIT team of STANLIB Asset Management, and was portfolio manager of the STANLIB Africa Listed Property Fund until his appointment at EPPF in May 2014 to the role of Deputy CIO. Ndabe became Acting CIO between April and November 2016 whereon he was appointed CIO of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree (Actuarial) from UCT. He is also a CFA charterholder and a CAIA charterholder.

Shainal Sukha

Managing Director – Sukha and Associates (Pty) Ltd

Shainal Sukha is owner and founder of Sukha and Associates (Pty) Ltd (S&A) - a black-owned boutique and independent investment consulting business based in Cape Town. S&A consults to retirement funds with assets in excess of R32 billion, but also to select high net worth individuals. S&A is known for its specialist skills including asset allocation, manager research, derivatives and alternative asset classes. S&A is the first black-owned asset consulting firm in South Africa to become a signatory to the United Nations Principles of Responsible Investing.

With an Actuarial Science background and over twelve years’ investment consulting experience, Shainal has provided high-quality advice on all investment, risk and governance related matters. He also serves on the Investment Committee of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and is a “think-tank” member for the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP).

Shainal has been instrumental in raising some of the shortcomings in the investment consulting industry. He is a promoter of “dual consulting”, which some of the largest retirement funds in South Africa have implemented, in order to improve governance and the overall quality of investment decision-making.

He is qualified with a BSc Hons (Actuarial Science) and a Diploma in Actuarial Techniques.
