Nazmeera Moola

Economist | Strategist | Columnist | Co-head of SA & Africa Fixed Income - Investec Asset Management

Nazmeera is a co-head of SA & Africa Fixed Income, as well as economist and strategist for the Emerging Market Fixed Income team at Investec Asset Management. Nazmeera runs the top-down process for both the SA Rates and Credit teams. She has been published extensively, including in the Financial Mail and Business Times.

Nazmeera joined the firm in 2013 from Macquarie First South where she was head of Macro Strategy. She began her career as an economist at Merrill Lynch in South Africa and London.

She graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Business Science degree and is also a CFA charterholder. She is a non-executive director of Mercedes-Benz South Africa and was a non-executive director of Transnet SOC from 2010 to 2015.

Max du Preez

South African political analyst | Author | Columnist | Documentary filmmaker

Max du Preez is one of South Africa’s foremost journalists and political analysts. After working as, a political correspondent for various newspapers, he founded Vrye Weekblad, South Africa’s first anti-apartheid Afrikaans newspaper, in 1988, and after 1994 he launched the television programmes Special Report on the Truth Commission and Special Assignment.

His books include Pale Native, Dwars, Of Lovers, Warriors and Prophets, Oranje Blanje Blues, Of Tricksters, Tyrants and Turncoats and Oor Krygers, Korrelkoppe en Konkelaars. He is currently a syndicated political columnist, public speaker and documentary filmmaker. Among his awards are the Pringle Award from the South African Society of Journalists, the Louis M Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism from the Nieman Fellows at Harvard University, and the Excellence in Journalism award from the Southern African Foreign Correspondents Association. He was the 2006 Yale Globalist International Journalist of the Year and the 2008 recipient of the Nat Nakasa Award for Integrity and Courage in Journalism from the SA National Editors Forum. He is a fellow of the Centre for Leadership Ethics in Africa at the University of Fort Hare and extraordinary professor at the School of Communications at North-West University.

Brian Foster

Author | Co-founder of Beyond RDR | Financial planning consultant

Brian Foster has been a financial planner for over 30 years and has been charging fees for financial planning since 1997. He has owned and managed two successful UK financial planning firms, the last of which was sold in 2012 when he emigrated to South Africa.

He is the author of the e-book Keep Calm & Survive RDR - A short guide for financial planning firms concerned about regulatory change.

Nicolaas Marais

President of Wells Fargo Asset Management & head of Multi-Asset Class Solutions

Nicolaas Marais is president and head of Multi–Asset Class Solutions and New Product Research & Development for Wells Fargo Asset Management (WFAM). His team focusses on the development and management of strong multi–asset class solutions and oversees product development and research to ensure future-focussed offerings across asset classes, geographies, and investment products.

Nicolaas most recently served as the global head of Multi-Asset Investments and Portfolio Solutions at Schroders, leading a UK-centric Diversified Growth and Liability Driven Investing division into a Global Multi-Asset and Solutions business.

Prior to his five years with Schroders, his earlier roles include:

  • BlackRock: Global Head of Portfolio Management for the Multi-Asset and Client Solutions team, responsible for portfolio management, research and investment strategy
  • Barclays Global Investors: global head of Investment Strategy, head of Active Equity-Europe, head of Investment Strategy U.K./Europe, head of Active Equity Product Management
  • The World Bank Group: bond trader
  • South African Reserve Bank: gold trader

Nicolaas holds his doctorate of commerce in Economics from the University of South Africa. He earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and an advanced diploma in International Economic Policy research from the Kiel Institute of World Economics in Germany. He has earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) designation.

Jurie Strydom

Chief Executive Officer, Sanlam Personal Finance

Jurie grew up in Bellville near Cape Town and completed his Bachelor of Business Science degree at the University of Cape Town in 1993 as a Sanlam bursary-holder. After spending a year on an internship in London after graduation he joined Sanlam in employee benefits in 1999. When he left in 2004 he was head of broker distribution for Sanlam Personal Finance (SPF), having qualified as an actuary and a CFA Charterholder.

Jurie was then managing director of Alexander Forbes Life, chief executive of Regent Insurance Group and an executive director of Imperial Holdings, before joining Sanlam again in January 2016 as deputy CEO of Sanlam Personal Finance (SPF), and more recently CE of SPF. He completed an MBA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2011.

Anton Raath

Chief Executive Officer, Glacier by Sanlam

Anton was appointed chief executive of Glacier by Sanlam in January 2005. He is a chartered accountant with higher diplomas in Accounting (University of Witwatersrand) and Tax Law (University of Cape Town). Anton began his career at Ironside Greenwood before joining Southern Life in 1983.

In 1996 he was appointed director: Business Services at Southern Asset Management. Two years later he took up the role of their chief operating officer. He was appointed head of retail at Gensec Asset Management in January 2000. Later that year he was appointed deputy managing director and chief operating officer at Sanlam Investment Management. In 2002, Anton was appointed as managing director of Sanlam Private Investments (now Sanlam Private Wealth) while still continuing to fulfil his duties as COO.

Maya Fisher-French

Speaker & MC | Author | Award-winning personal finance journalist | Financial workshop presenter

Maya Fisher-French is a well-known South African personal financial journalist and author of Maya on Money: Implement your Money Plan. She is twice winner of the prestigious Sanlam Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism for the category of Consumer Financial Education. Apart from managing the website, Maya is editor of My Money My Lifestyle, the personal finance section of national Sunday newspaper City Press. She edited the South African version of Dave Ramsey’s best seller The Total Money Makeover. Maya is an invited columnist and commentator across several media channels, including magazines, radio and television and is a popular speaker at both local and international events where she provides a consumers’ perspective on the financial industry. She also provides money management workshops for employees.

Prior to becoming a financial journalist in 2003, Maya worked in the financial industry for a stock broking company where she developed their private client trading desk and headed up the offshore investment division. Prior to that she worked for Investec Private Bank as a consultant on their direct investment desk. Maya has a Bachelor of Arts in English and an Honours degree in Economics from the University of the Witwatersrand.
